Marbeya Sound: Colonies (self-released, 9/24/13)
For a first full-length release, Marbeya Sound’sColonies is something of a rare bird: exploratory, cinematic, and instrumental, without wandering off into dangerously pretentious territory. Even with its vintage, Soviet-era, analog synths and an special indebtedness to the intrepid film scores of Vangelis and Wendy Carlos — even then, the groove produced by this Mexico City duo is enough to level the playing field for cosmic trips and night drives alike.
The feeling captured by authentic analog output is captured well by the group, but a headphone listen — particularly to the first two tracks “Implanted Memories” and “Grow Back to Be Eaten Again” — is a must for anyone looking for that special “just licked a Tesla coil” sensation.
